MOOD DISORDERS

Research has shown that the prevalence of major depressive disorder, dysthymia, and bipolar disorder are all increased in people with borderline disorder. A major depressive disorder occurs at some time in more than 80 percent of people with borderline disorder, whereas it occurs in 5 to 12 percent of men and 10 to 25 percent of women in the general population. Almost 40 percent of people with borderline disorder will develop dysthymia.

Because major depressive episodes and dysthymia occur so commonly with borderline disorder, it’s important that you know their symptoms and immediately alert your physician if they occur.
